Window Moisture & Fog Finder

Window moisture guide

Answer a few safe observation questions to understand where the moisture probably is and what to do next.

This tool provides general screening guidance, not a confirmed diagnosis. Window design, weather, installation, and building conditions can change the cause.

You can stop at any time during the check.

Do not dismantle glazing, force a sash, lean outside, or use an unsafe ladder to answer these questions.

Quick moisture-location comparison

Inside surface

Moisture that wipes away from indoors is usually room-side condensation. Indoor humidity, cold glass, and limited air circulation can contribute.

Outside surface

Exterior dew can appear on humid mornings and may clear with sunlight or warming. It does not by itself prove a defective window.

Between panes

Haze that remains after both safely accessible surfaces are clean strongly suggests moisture inside the insulated-glass unit.

During rain

Water around the frame, trim, sill, or wall during rain may follow an installation, flashing, drainage, wall, roof, or window path and should not be treated as ordinary condensation.

Safe location check

Wipe only the accessible room-side glass with a clean, dry cloth. Observe the exterior from a safe position. Record when the pattern appears and whether it changes. Do not dismantle glazing or use unsafe access.
